Why Annual Bloodwork Matters: What a Simple Lab Draw Can Reveal

Dr. Catherine Arevalo

Primary Care Physician

Many of the most common chronic conditions in Central Florida—diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders, kidney disease—develop silently over months or years. By the time you notice fatigue, weight changes, or unusual thirst, the underlying issue may already be well established. That is exactly why annual bloodwork is a cornerstone of preventive medicine: it gives your doctor a window into what is happening inside your body before you feel anything at all.

A standard annual panel typically includes a complete blood count (CBC), a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), a lipid panel, hemoglobin A1c or fasting glucose, and a thyroid screening. Together these tests evaluate your red and white blood cells, liver and kidney function, blood sugar trends, cholesterol levels, and thyroid hormone balance. Depending on your age, family history, and risk factors, we may also add vitamin D, B12, iron studies, or a urine analysis. The entire draw takes minutes and results are usually available within a day or two.

One of the most powerful aspects of annual labs is trend tracking. A single result tells you where you stand today, but comparing it to last year's numbers reveals the direction you are heading. A fasting glucose that creeps from 95 to 105 over two years is still technically normal, but it signals prediabetes risk that lifestyle changes can reverse. Similarly, a slow rise in LDL cholesterol gives us time to adjust diet, exercise, or medication before cardiovascular risk climbs.

Bloodwork also helps us manage medications safely. If you take a statin, blood pressure medication, or metformin, periodic lab checks confirm that your liver and kidneys are tolerating the therapy well and that the drug is achieving its target. Catching a subtle change in kidney function early can prevent a serious complication down the road.
