Telehealth vs In-Person Visits: When Each Makes Sense

Dr. Catherine Arevalo

Primary Care Physician

Telehealth has transformed the way patients access medical care, offering convenience and flexibility that were largely unavailable just a few years ago. Virtual visits allow patients to connect with their physician from home, reducing travel time, minimizing exposure to illness, and making healthcare more accessible for those with mobility challenges or busy schedules. However, telehealth is not a replacement for all in-person care, and understanding when each option is most appropriate helps patients receive the best possible treatment.

Telehealth works well for a range of common primary care needs. Follow-up visits for stable chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid disorders can often be managed effectively through video appointments, especially when recent lab work is available for review. Medication refill discussions, mental health check-ins, review of test results, and minor acute concerns like cold symptoms, allergies, or rashes are also well suited to virtual care. These visits save time without compromising quality when a physical examination is not required.

In-person visits remain essential when a hands-on evaluation is needed. New or worsening symptoms, chest pain, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, suspected infections requiring examination, musculoskeletal injuries, and skin lesions that need close inspection all warrant an office visit. Preventive care appointments, including annual physicals, well-child visits, and immunizations, also require in-person attendance. Certain diagnostic procedures, blood draws, and screenings simply cannot be performed remotely.

The best approach often combines both modalities. A patient might complete lab work in the office and then review results via telehealth the following week. This hybrid model supports continuity of care while maximizing convenience. Primary care has always valued flexibility and patient-centered decision-making, and telehealth extends those principles into the digital age.
