Mosquito season stretches longer in Central Florida than in most of the country. Between March and October, the warm evenings that feel so inviting also invite swarms of Culex and Aedes mosquitoes, the very ones that can transmit West Nile virus, dengue, and other illnesses. For many patients these diseases are mild, but in rare cases they can lead to hospitalization or neurologic symptoms when left unchecked.
Primary care is the best place to start guarding against mosquito-borne illness. We review your travel plans, examine your immune status, and make sure vaccinations such as tetanus, hepatitis, and, if you travel outside the continental U.S., yellow fever, are up to date. Prevention also happens at home: remove standing water around your yard, keep gutters clear, install or repair window and door screens, and use EPA-approved repellents when spending time outdoors, especially near dawn and dusk.
If a bite does leave a mosquito-borne infection behind, recognize the warning signs. Persistent fever, headache, body aches, rash, or neck stiffness warrant evaluation. We can order laboratory testing for West Nile virus, dengue, and other pathogens when symptoms suggest a serious infection. Early care makes a difference—some illnesses benefit from close monitoring of hydration and platelet counts, while others need nothing more than rest and reassurance.
For patients with chronic conditions, mosquito season means an extra layer of planning. If you rely on medications such as insulin or oxygen concentrators, keep an extra supply on hand and make a power plan for outages. Stay connected with your primary care team so we can adjust therapies if a fever or illness arrives unexpectedly.
